The Topanga Memorial Day Parade / Monday, May 28, 2017
Memorial Day is a national holiday with somber meaning and significant sacrifice. For most the weekend is the start of a summer season with warm weather, pool parties and vacations with friends.
For Topanga it’s the final day of a 3 day raucous weekend with neighbors, kin folk and a whole country canyon having a Bohemian celebration and rockin’ good music. On Monday, May 28th, we will have a parade, with respect and admiration for those that have gone before us in arms to protect and preserve our right to live in this great society, this remarkable republic we call the United States. We have had this Memorial Day parade for 43 years, not to celebrate conflict, but to respect those that fought to keep conflict from reaching us. To remember those who fought to preserve the peace and tranquility that we have come to expect and love so deeply.
So with a vision of love and peace we dip and stroke our brush for another year of carefully crafted and cleverly conceived characters, carts and carriages to rejoice in the brotherhood of neighborly affection and community friendship to promote another Memorial Day for canyon acknowledgement and respect of the men and women in our armed services, past and present. This is your time to bring your children near, your pets inside and your friends over to the house to plan and procure the needed tools and supplies to make your statement, your passion or your conveyance an entry in the best community parade in the world. We are not looking for professionally polished or mechanically made costumes, we are looking for YOU, inside YOUR vision of what makes peace and love a priority in your life. We want to see how you would celebrate and promote the highest ideals of peace, love and patriotism with respect and reverence for those who have gone before us.
We have had motorcycles, roller-skaters, dogs, goats, horses, hikers, Veterans, painters, train cars, mermaids, peaceniks, Basset hounds, banjo players, firemen, Boy Scouts, convertible cars, bikers, karate kids, water fights and music make this parade a righteous ritual to kick off a great summer of community events that rock the community club. You should be in it, you should get your friends to watch it and your children to carry on the tradition. Bring every child and put them on bikes, in seats or on your shoulders, so they can revel in the spirit of Memorial Day. Every pet, no matter how many legs and tails, feathers or fur should feel a part of the celebration since they should feel a part of the pack.
On Memorial Day, participants should wake up at 630am and stroll on down to the Pine Tree Circle shopping center. Entries line up starting at 7:00am, judging starts at 7:45am and the road closes and parade launches at 830am. The end of the parade is Cheney Road just past the community center. For spectators, you should be ready to line up on the street at 0830 and depending on where you are located, expect to see the parade up to 10-11am. Then jump into the parade just in front of the final entry, the Malibu Patrol Bronco and come join us for the final day of Topanga Days!
